Home Loans And Women: How To Afford The Cost of A New Home

Are you a woman who has the dream of owning your own home?  If you do, you are definitely not alone. While a large number of women already own their own homes, there are even more who are looking to do so.

Unfortunately, many women mistakenly believe that they cannot afford the cost of a new home.  Yes, there are really some who may be unable to afford the cost of a new home, but, for others, it is actually a lot easier than it appears.

Home loans for womenThe first step in buying a new home involves examining where you would like to reside.  This is important as it gives you an idea as to what the average asking price for homes is.  This average asking price can give you an idea as to the amount of money that you would need to have.

Since different areas of the country have different real estate market conditions, this should be one of your very first steps. Once you decide where you would like to live, you can go about finding a home to buy, as well as get financing for that home.

Speaking of financing, there are many individuals who mistakenly believe that they need to have money, upfront, to buy a home.  That is not the truth.

In fact, most women and men, use home loans, provided by financial lenders, to afford the cost of a home.  If you have yet to consider getting a home loan for your new home purchase, this is the time to do so.

If you need to obtain a home loan to purchase a new home, your first thought may be to head on down to your local bank. While this is more than possible to do, you may want to carry a copy of your income tax returns.

Banks will use this document and other assets you possess to determine if you are a good candidate for receiving a loan from them. The better your financial status, the more likely it is that you will be awarded financing for the purchase of your new home.

Although a home loan can help you afford the cost of a new home, financial lenders will first require a down payment.  This down payment varies from lender to lender.  For many individuals, this is where the problem comes in. If you are wondering how you can come up with the money needed for a down payment, you will want to continue reading.

How To Save For The Down Payment On Your Home Loan

One of the easiest ways for you to save money for a new home down payment is by reducing or completely eliminating all of your unnecessary purchases.  These unnecessary purchases may include a coffee, soda, or other snacks at work, dining out, a full cable television package, and so forth.

Unfortunately, many individuals do not realize the importance of eliminating their unnecessary purchases, when looking to save money to buy a new home.  Yes, you may only be able to save Rs 100 or 500 a week, but it is important to remember that money can add up overtime.

Another way that many women work to come up with the down payment needed to buy a home is by getting a second job or by requesting additional hours at work. While doing so may result in you having less free time with your family, it is a sacrifice that many women are willing to make.

With an increased workload at work or a second job, even just a part-time one where you only work ten hours a week, you may be able to quickly come up with the down payment needed to acquire a home loan.

For many women, home ownership is an issue that they deal with in their life.  The approaches here are just a few of the many ways that you can go about getting the home of your dreams.

Jewelery Designer Jobs: Creative Careers for Indian Women

With India being the largest jewelery market in the world (worth around Rs. 70,000 crore domestically), a career in jewelery designing can be extremely lucrative.

While the predominant focus has traditionally been on gold, in recent years the industry has slowly shifted its focus to gems and other precious stones, thus significantly widening the scope of jewellery designers. Read on to find out more about a career in jewellery designing.

Jewelery Design Courses:

Previously, the only way to learn jewelery designing was via an apprenticeship with an established and experienced jeweller. Nowadays, there are several different types of institutes which offer diploma and certificate courses in jewelery designing that are economical, time-efficient, and up-to-date with modern trends and techniques.

These institutes do not discriminate in terms of your previous educational/employment background, but having a fine arts or design background invariably helps. They usually require an applicant to sit an entrance examination and/or may ask for a portfolio of work to be presented.

Check with individual colleges and institutes for their procedures. Some institutes where you can study jewelery designing in India are:

• NIFT, New Delhi.
• Indian Institute of Jewelery, Mumbai.
• Jewelery Design and Technology Institute (JDTI), Noida.
• SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
• South Delhi Polytechnic for Women, New Delhi.
• Small Industries Service Institute, Chennai.
• Jagannath Rathi Vocational Guidance and Training Institute (JRVGTI), Pune.

Longer study programs can cost between Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 1,80,000, while short-term courses range from Rs. 15,000-50,000. Note that universities and colleges abroad do offer programs in jewelery design as well, but will cost significantly higher.

Employment Options In Jewelery Design:

As a jewelery designer, you do have a few varied options as to where to work. You can:

Work with a jewelery designing firm

Depending on your level of training, you can start off either as an intern or a junior designer. The majority of these cater to the domestic market.

Work with a jewelery export house

This option is again, either as an intern or a junior designer, but with designs that are geared for customers overseas. A great option for designers who prefer their creations in more international designs.

Start up your own firm or export house

This is a pricier option, but extremely rewarding if you’ve got an entrepreneurial spirit to go along with your creative talent. Plus, you get to be your own boss!

Work as a freelance designer

This option allows you a lot more freedom in general: you can take on assignments from designing firms and export houses, work directly with jewelery stores, act as a consultant to film, television, and stage productions, consult for magazines, or even be commissioned by individuals.

The Jewelery Designing Profession:

The profession of jewelery designing can be broadly divided into spheres: design, and production. When working freelance, or in the early days of starting your own firm, you handle both aspects yourself. In designing firms, however, a distinction is made between the two.

Design activities include:
• Consulting with clients and/or other stakeholders of the final product;
• Brainstorming and other conceptualising activities as regards the design/updating of the final product;
• Sketching out ideas, either on paper, or using computer software towards the client’s vision and needs.

Production activities can include, but are usually not limited to:
• Model-making;
• Stone-setting/Enameling;
• Welding/Soldering;
• Electroplating; and,
• Polishing.

Tips for Choosing a Career in Jewelery Designing:

• If you’re thinking of a career in this field, being a person who is creative is by far the most essential prerequisite. You also need a reasonable sense of design, and the drive to keep your knowledge and skills updated when it comes to changing trends and continually-improving techniques.

• Industry trends show most jewelery designers start their careers earning anywhere between 7,000 to 10,000 rupees a month; with experience come increases to Rs. 20,000 and beyond. Top-rated designers can even receive over a lakh a month.

• Job vacancies are usually not advertised, so getting a foothold in the industry can be a bit challenging. Work on your contacts and keep networking until you can firmly establish yourself as a serious and dedicated professional. A strong portfolio is essential in order to impress employers.

Business Outsourcing Tips: How To Outsource Business Successfully

Business outsourcing is when a company hires an outside source to complete work or a project which would normally be done by the staff. Outsourcing has become popular as a solution for a business to save money and complete projects and tasks without having full time employees do the work.

Business outsourcing

Companies might consider business outsourcing for many different reasons. A company might consider outsourcing to save money by cutting down on costs, or they might not have the employee resources to complete a particular project.

Outsourcing gives a company the opportunity to complete a crucial project by people who are not their employees. This means they don’t have to pay a salary or provide benefits to them.

When a company business decides to outsource a project, it will usually enter into an agreement or contract with the outsourcing company. The contract will include the terms of the agreement, like the steps taken to complete the project, the time the project will take, people involved, cost, and required resources from the client.

There are many different types of outsourcing for many different business segments. The most common segments of a business that hires outsourcing companies for assistance include accounting services to help with payroll, inventory, and financial issues.

The biggest field of outsourcing for companies today is in the Information Technology field. This is because companies frequently need to upgrade their phones, computers, need cabling installed, troubleshooting, programming and more. Companies also outsource people for customer service positions, call centers, and telemarketing.

Reasons To Consider Business Outsourcing

There are many reasons you might consider outsourcing for your company. Many of these reasons might include the resources, cost, or staff. If you are a growing company or are upgrading systems, you will have many projects you need to complete simultaneously for your expansion.

You might not have a staff that knows how to complete the project or your staff may not have enough people to complete the project in the time frame you would like it to be done. Outsourcing is an excellent option when you face issues like this. An outsourcing company can come into your business and complete the project on your required deadline.

Another reason you might consider outsourcing is to save money. You might currently have full-time employees in positions that only require them to be around for certain times of the year. It is cheaper to eliminate the full time employee position and bring in the outsourcing company only when you need them to work.

When you bring in an outsourcing company to complete a project rather than hire a full time employee you are saving on the yearly salary and the benefits you would have to offer that employee. In most cases, it is usually cheaper to hire an individual or team of people on a temporary basis than it is to use your own staff.

You might have a full-time employee you need for one specific task, but that has a lot of downtime. So you have to find work for them to keep them busy. There is often no reason to pay a full-time employee if you can hire someone only for the duration you need them.

Business Outsourcing Contracts

When you consider business outsourcing it is important to draw up a contractual agreement for you and the outsourcing company to sign. This is to protect your company and the funds you have for the project.

The contract will spell out all of your expectations to the project and what the role of the company and their employees will be. It will define the project in full including items such as the time line, budget, people, and more. This gives you the opportunity to hold the company accountable for the work you are asking to be done.

When you sign a contractual agreement for business outsourcing the contract will specify the time frame of the project and set a timeline. The timeline will set milestones during the project and specify each with an expected completion date.

This includes the amount of hours it takes for completion of the project. If the company promised the project would be completed in a certain amount of hours and it is not then their staff will be working for free until the project is completed.

In addition, many contractual agreements will specify percentages of payment according to the completion of each set milestone. If the completion or the milestone is not met on the expected date, a stipulation may be defined on the contractual agreement also.

The contract signed between you and a business outsourcing company will define the budget of the project and what the company has agreed to do the project for. If the company has underbid the project, then they must pay the excess funds to complete the project. It is not your responsibility if the company underbids, and the contract should be clear on this.

Maintaining Quality Of Service When Outsourcing Projects

If you have poorly defined your contract with a business outsourcing company, the quality of the project may suffer severely. You don’t want your business to suffer because you were not clear about how the project needed to be done and now have a completed project that makes your customers very unhappy.

There are many safeguards you can put in place to ensure that the project meets the expected quality requirements when you’re using a company other than yours. When you define the objectives for the project you want completed they need to be defined clearly and everyone needs to acknowledge that they agree to them. Being too picky is better than not being specific enough.

If you end up forgetting certain things and not specifying them you’re opening a door for poor work to be done. When this happens, you cannot request it be changed and done a different way, because it was not specified in the contract. In this case you’ll end up making additional payments to have things done the way you want because you didn’t properly specify it in the contract.

The specifications for the project should never be written by just one person. Projects need to be written by everyone involved and affected by the project. You need to be sure you don’t miss anything that might cause poor quality with the project.

If you need to research the equipment and how it works then you should. Many people can be affected by poor quality in a project, such as your employees who are using the equipment. Shareholders and stakeholders also have a vested interest in ensuring that the money spent on an outsourced project is being spent well.

Women Entrepreneurs In India: How Divorce Affects Business

Divorce isn’t a word that one associates very heavily with Indian society. In fact, there are no statistics available on the number of marriages that end in divorce, only estimates.

Business ContractAnd yet, over the past decade, with the overwhelming melding of cultures, brought on by globalization and its driving forces, the social taboo of the concept is quickly evaporating. In such an environment, it is interesting to examine how a divorce affects women business owners.

Traditionally, marital dissolution in Indian society was not a choice a woman could make, if only owing to her slightly lower status in society.

However, with the transitioning of India as we step into the 21st century, more and more women are finding equal status with men. Especially in urban areas, homes with two incomes are quickly becoming the norm.

When it comes to entrepreneurship however, this financial equality is often an extra strand in the thread joining man and woman.

It is estimated that in Mumbai, about 35% women who run small to mid-size businesses have family members (especially spouses) with some interest in the business. Often, when a marriage breaks, this business partnership also dissolves.

The issues that arise from equal-share jointly owned businesses are numerous, the most significant of them being legal. Since family law and civil law are still backdated in this country, there aren’t explicit guidelines for mutually agreeable steps that can be taken in such a scenario.

Speedy divorce cases do allow for court-approved mediators to help reach a settlement, since there exist several ambiguities in what is an acceptable settlement. The legal conundrum that exists arises because there isn’t a definite overlap between partnership law and marriage law.

The best case scenario in this case would be to dissolve the partnership and either sell one or both parties’ shares to another investor. In case of a desire to avoid the legal route, some couples choose to remain business partners, and lead independent lives otherwise. Of course, more often than not, this can lead to discordance of its own.

As Shweta Padmanabha says, “My ex-husband and I disagreed on everything else in life, and yet we had the perfect working relationship. Neither of us wanted to give that up, and so we chose to keep our import-export business solid. However, when he tried to bring his new, younger, wife into the business, I had had enough. My lawyers told me I would have gotten a better settlement had I dissolved the partnership along with the divorce settlement, but that’s water under the bridge now.” And yet, this is but one deterrent to a divorce amongst business partners.

Often, especially in the services industry, one or both spouses are the face of the company. A client roster, in these cases, gets used to having a familiar face in their business dealings. Divorces can often, directly or indirectly affect the business in this way. To be able to introduce a new face to a client and gain the same trust, or worse, tussle in competing firms for a client, can more often than not prove detrimental to the cause of both the warring parties.

Nikita Kadam, who ran a successful event management company had finally graduated to doing corporate big-ticket events, says, “The client point-blank refused to work with me after my husband left me. I definitely got the company, but in our business, a company is only as big as the client list we have.”

Often, with such stories, one finds that you have to build back as much of your business as you have to your personal life. Kadam’s husband, Karthik, who settled the marriage amicably and was moving out of the country, even tried to assist Nikita with said clients, but they insisted that their faith lay in him being at the helm of their account.

In some cases, women choose to have the men overseeing the financial aspects of their company’s interests, and aren’t entirely aware of asset valuations, and work value. Especially in some small companies, where the male spouse has a part time interest whilst enjoying full-time employment elsewhere, the main business owner, the woman, may get a raw deal during the dissolution of the partnership, with an undervaluation of her contribution to the company.

Logistically, it is often best to divide the company equally and share clients and accounts. Divorcing the residual emotions from the failure of your marriage can be significantly helpful in reaching a mutually beneficial state of affairs.

A prominent health club franchise owner, who wishes to not be named, was heard saying that she was glad that the anger she felt for her husband, upon discovering his infidelities, did not extend to the settlement table.

They split their franchise into two, and she is now earning a significantly higher amount by being more aggressive in her operations of a smaller number of gyms. It goes without saying, of course, that she’s glad she doesn’t have the emotional stress of a marriage on the rocks pulling her productivity down.

These are just a few of the issues that female entrepreneurs who have spousal interests in their enterprises face. The solution to these issues is essentially the same, but not a very popular route, especially in India.

In cases where a woman owns a business prior to her betrothal, it is advisable to have a pre-nuptial agreement stating the extent of his involvement in the business and agreeable terms of settlement in case of a separation. This agreement can be revisited upon changes in the business or of each party’s involvement, but since the social implications of it are not entirely kosher, women generally choose to not adopt such safeguards.

Again, for couples who start businesses together, it is advisable to create firm partnership agreements or post-nuptial agreements, and revisit them from time to time. Post-nups of course aren’t as legally sound as pre-nuptial agreements, but they still provide for some legal safeguards.

A fair conclusion that can be drawn from these investigations is that whilst one would hope for a marriage to last forever, in the current environment, a guarantee of any sort cannot be made. Working with your significant other can be very rewarding, and at the same time it can be very risky in case of future discord.

At the end of the day, you, as a woman, need to evaluate the risk you’re willing to take in the name of love, and in case your confidence falters, examine thoroughly how you can redeem the situation.

Solo Travel For Women: Tips For Safety On Cruise Ships

Many solo women travellers are opting to take a cruise vacation as a safe and convenient way to travel, explore new places and meet new people along the way. The majority of them have a memorable experience. Over the past few years however, there have been numerous reports of missing persons and cruise ship crime.

While it may seem like the cruise ship industry has a problem, the reality is that cruise ship accidents are few and far in between. Despite the fact that you are safe aboard a cruise ship, you should still take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. There are a number of steps that you can take.

Solo travel for women

Most of these precautions are simple and can be done with little or no effort. Despite being simple, these precautions could keep you safe and your finances in check when you are on a cruise.

Many individuals believe that cruise ship safety should begin once they board the ship; however, it should begin well in advance. When traveling on a cruise ship, it is likely that you will visit foreign countries.

In the event of a mistake or disaster, you are encouraged to have all of your important documents on hand. These documents should include your passport and driver’s license.

Before boarding your cruise ship, you are encouraged to make copies of all of these documents. In addition to the originals, you should carry a copy with you and leave the other at home.

When you finally board your cruise ship, there are a number of steps that you should take to ensure your safety. These steps include familiarizing yourself with the cruise ship.

Today’s most popular cruise ships are large in size. It may take some time to examine the ship, but you are still encouraged to do so. In addition to physically seeing the ship, it is advised that you request a map. This map should be carried with you at all times; it may come in handy if you lose your way.

Familiarizing yourself with your cruise ship is important, but so is familiarizing yourself with other passengers. You do not have to be outgoing or social to accomplish this.

Simply keeping an eye out for individuals that appear to be shady or mysterious is a great way to protect yourself. If you were on land, it is likely that you would avoid individuals that make you feel uncomfortable. The same should apply aboard a cruise ship.

When walking around a cruise ship, you are advised not to travel alone. As with land, traveling with others is likely to reduce or eliminate your chances of becoming a crime victim.

If you must move around the ship alone, you need to inform a number of individuals where you will be headed and when you expect to return. In the event that something does happen, a relative or friend should know exactly where to find you.

When on a cruise ship, your personal safety should be your first concern. In addition to personal safety, the safety of your belongings should also be important. If you are traveling with expensive luggage or large sums of money, you may want to take extra precautions.

Before you leave home, you may want to consider leaving your expensive belongings behind. Most cruise ships will not reimburse their passengers for lost money or belongings; therefore, if you can’t afford to replace it, you might not want to bring it.

When it comes to theft, cash and credit cards are often the most sought after items. Instead of carrying a purse or a wallet, you are encouraged to carry a money pouch.

To offer the utmost protection, you may want to obtain a money pouch that can be worn around your neck and tucked into your shirt. These pouches often make it impossible for thieves to strike.

In the event that you are unable to use a money pouch or you left yours at home, you are urged to divide up your money. Keeping your money in multiple locations may provide you with financial protection if a theft does occur.

If you must use a purse, you are encouraged to keep it with you at all times. Women with wallets are urged to keep their wallets in their front pockets or on a sling purse close to your body.

Cruise ships are exciting and, for the most part, safe. With a few simple precautions, you can safely enjoy your vacation aboard a cruise ship without fretting over the safety of yourself and your belongings.

Healthy Eating Habits For Women At Work: Tips To Change How You Eat

Being a healthy eater requires you to become both educated and smart about what healthy eating actually is.  Being food smart isn’t about learning to calculate grams or fat, or is it about studying labels and counting calories.

Woman eating orange smiling on yellow background. Candid natural beauty eating healthy.

Healthy eating is all about balanced and moderate eating, consisting of healthy meals at least three times per day.  Healthy eaters eat many different types of foods, not limiting themselves to one specific food type or food group.

When someone is unable to take control of their eating, they are also likely to get out of control with other aspects of life as well.  Healthy eaters have learned to take care of themselves and their eating with sound judgment and making wise decisions.  They are always aware of what they eat, and know the effect that it will have on their bodies.

Healthy eating is a way of life, something that you can do to enhance your body or your lifestyle. The first step is to change how you eat. Here are some tips to achieve that goal.

  • Changing How You Eat

As you may know, not fueling up with the right nutrients can affect how well your body performs and your overall fitness benefits.  Even though healthy eating is important, there are myths that hinder your performance if you listen to them.

Below, you’ll find some myth busters on healthy eating.

1. Working out on an empty stomach

If you hear a rumbling noise in your stomach, the rumbling is trying to tell you something.  Without listening to them, you are forcing your body to run without any fuel.  Before you exercise or do any physical activity, always eat a light snack such as an apple.

2. Relying on energy bars and drinks

Although they are fine every once in a while, they don’t deliver the antioxidants you need to prevent cancer.  Fruits and vegetables are your best bets, as they are loaded in vitamins, minerals, fluid, and fiber.

3. Skipping breakfast

Skipping breakfast is never a good idea, as  breakfast starts the day.  Your body needs fuel as soon as possible, and without it, you’ll be hungry throughout the day.

4. Low carb diets

Your body needs carbohydrates for your muscles and the storing of energy.

5. Eating what you want

Eating healthy and exercising doesn’t give you an all access pass to eat anything you want.  Everyone needs the same nutrients whether they exercise or not, as well as fruits and vegetables.

6. Not enough calories

Although losing weight involves calories, losing it too quickly is never safe.  What you should do, is aim for 1 – 2 pounds a week.  Always make sure that you are getting enough calories to keep your body operating smoothly.  If you start dropping weight too fast, eat a bit more food.

7. Skip soda and alcohol

Water, milk, and juice is the best to drink for active people.  You should drink often, and not require on thirst to be an indicator.  By the time you get thirsty, your body is already running a bit too low.

Changing how you eat is always a great step towards healthy eating and it will affect how your body performs.  The healthier you eat, you better you’ll feel.  Once you give it a chance, you’ll see in no time at all just how much it can change your life – for the better.

  • Eating Healthy On The Run

Whether your traveling on the go or around the home, you don’t need to give up healthy eating simply because you are on the run.  The fact is, healthy eating is even more important when your trying to keep up with a busy schedule.

Having a good diet will help your body to handle stress better.  As you hustle about, a healthy meal is probably the last thing you think about.  The following tips can help you eat when your on the go.

Restaurants

With tempting menus, large portions, and a festive atmosphere, it’s easy to skip healthy eating.  It’s okay to splurge every now and then, although you’ll pack on a lot of weight if you make it a habit.   When you eat out at restaurants, always be smart about it.

Airports

An airport can be a very stressful place, although you shouldn’t scrap your diet because of it.  Eat because you are hungry, not because of stress, boredom, or to kill time.

In your car

Keep some healthy snacks in your car at all times, so that when you get hungry – you have them.

At home

Evenings and mornings are busy times in most homes. Making the time to eat can be hard, although you shouldn’t run out the door without eating breakfast first.  Cereal with milk, a banana, muffin, or even a bagel is a great way to start the day.

Anytime you are on the go, always make sure that you make the right food decisions.  You can take  healthy food with you if you need to, so that you have it when you need it.

Eating healthy on the go is easy to do, once you know how.  Never sacrifice healthy food for junk, as your body will regret it later. If you’ve thought about making your life better, healthy eating is just the place to start.  You’ll make life easier for you and your family.

Maternity Leave

Returning To Work: Back-To-Work Programmes For Indian Women

Whether by personal choice, or as a result of unalterable circumstances, many working women in India today take sabbaticals and other extended periods of leave.

By the time circumstances change for the better, re-entering the workforce can often be difficult and frustrating. However, there are avenues out there that you can access to make the transition back to work in a smooth, hassle-free manner.

Legal Provisions For Working Women In India:

It’s important to know your legal rights as a woman and an employee. The Maternity Benefits Act, 1961, applies to all women across India employed with their organisation for at least 80 days in the past 12 calendar months.

It specifies that a woman has right to paid leave for at least six weeks after the date of delivery (or miscarriage) of her child, and to be fully reinstated to her previous position after that minimum period of time. In the event of illness caused by said delivery or miscarriage, additional leave with full pay must be granted for the maximum of one month.

However, many companies have their own HR policies about maternity leave, benefits, and return-to-work that go beyond the Government’s minimum guidelines: they can offer anywhere between 3-6 months of leave apart from guaranteed reinstatement upon return.

Check with your own company’s policies and your employment contract to be sure of your individual benefits and assurance of reinstatement. While these provisions specifically apply to women taking time off for pregnancies and childbirth, some companies have similar provisions for personal sabbaticals.

Larger corporations tend to have better policies – for women who work in smaller set-ups, insisting on your legal rights and a written agreement (ideally before the start of your leave) is an advisable course of action.

Corporate Programmes For Working Women:

Fleximoms additionally runs a “preparedness” module that helps women going back to work be up-to-date with jobseeking trends and skills.

The School of Inspired Leadership (SOIL) offers a one-year programme called Career Reconnect for Women, also aimed specifically at women getting back to work after a sabbatical. The programme aims to “help women gain insight into relevant and contemporary areas of business that will help them rejoin corporate life or start their own entrepreneurial venture.” The programme, which begins in August, is a bit pricey at Rs.7,46,950, but includes accommodation and meals at the SOIL campus in Gurgaon, NCR.

Tips for Women Going Back to Work

• In interviews with employers, be frank and unapologetic about the time you took off from work. Be direct about what your priorities were at the time, and what they are now.

• If you’re currently on a sabbatical and will be for a while longer, consider getting back into your field on a part-time or consultant basis. This way, when you return to work full-time, employers will have less reservations about hiring someone who’s been “out of the game” over somebody who has recently graduated.

• When returning back to work, let employers know how you’ve been keeping up-to-date on your skills all the while. As a returning legal adviser or attorney, for example, you should demonstrate how aware you are of legal precedents since the start of your sabbatical; if you’re a certified professional in your field, show them how your accreditations are current.

Single Career Women: Challenges Of Working Women In India

Changing social trends indicate a significant rise in the number of single career women all over the world. Earlier, as we all know, women were expected to remain, and manage things, within the confines of their homes.

But nowadays, people are opening up to the fact that women are also capable of working in commercial fields and earn a living for themselves.

After much clamor about treating women as equals and abolishing gender discrimination, we now see a significant rise in the number of women, especially in high managerial positions and large companies.

However, there are still some key problems that single career women in India have to face in their day-to-day lives.

  • Domestic Issues:

The families of many single career women are still to accept them as bread earners. This is true, especially for developing like India, where the society is strictly patriarchal. Even if some of them do accept their daughters as working individuals, they still do not like to see them outshine their male siblings.

Says Niti, a 28-year old bank manager, “Even though I earn much more than my brother, my parents tend to take his job and professional demands more seriously. If there is a family wedding coming up, I am the one expected to take leave from work to attend it.”

While some single career women do not have the issue to deal with the issues above, their families do restrict their time out of the house due to safety concerns. Paranoid parents may unknowingly hamper their daughters’ professional growth by allowing them work only during specific day hours or in pre-defined professional settings.

Ruchi, 23, says, “My dad was against the very idea of me working in a call center as it involved night-shifts. Even the former was more lucrative, I had to take up a job at a day-care center as a receptionist.”

In nations like India, people are still concerned about what their neighbors or relatives might think about a certain issue. Even if the parents of single working women do not have problems with their daughters going out for work, people around will offer unsolicited advice.

This sometimes influences the parents’ mindset and they may begin pestering their daughters into sidelining their professional aspirations to get married and start a family. Given the tedious, and often futile, task of convincing their parents, the woman finds little support from her loved ones.

Swastika (name changed), a 25 year old IBM consultant, says, “I almost convinced my parents about taking up a job with the local newspaper at the start of my career when, my aunt gave her ‘valuable’ opinion about working females to my dad. I won the ‘battle’ single-handedly, with only my convincing power as my weapon.”

Some Indian men are yet to come to terms with the fact that women are also capable of being competent and professional workers. Single career women thus face the challenge of fighting their way through a chauvinist society.

  • Work Issues:

Single career women, are often discriminated at the workplace. They are always compared to their male counterparts, and even pitched against them in unfair situations.

Even though most large organizations have now come up with equality laws and regulations, there is always an underlying current of criticism that working women have to face from their peers, as well as, seniors.

Often career women may have to take a break from their work as they’re expected to take care of family issues. But more often than not, these sabbaticals result in women missing out on significant career opportunities and receive little support when they plan to rejoin the work place.

Jeannette Cleveland, in her book titled, Women and Men in Organizations: Sex and Gender Issues at Work, says, “… these (career) women succeeded by taking risks, pursuing line responsibility, managing people effectively, and having mentors- much like male executives …”

Despite these odds, single career women nowadays seem to sail through all these issues with much ease. The most important advantage they have over their married colleagues is that they can focus on their careers without the distraction of having to run back home to their husband and children. This allows them to grow and to be promoted faster, resulting in greater career satisfaction.
