I first blogged about the issue of why women tolerate abuse and domestic violence, last October when the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 came into effect in India. Tolerating abuse is stupid. Period. And, as I wrote in my blog post, children are not an excuse to stay in an abusive marriage.
But, as our cover story on legal awareness of women's rights shows, it will take more than passing laws to change the prevailing attitudes towards domestic violence in society and Indian men, in particular, many of whom still feel it is justified to use violence to "discipline" their wives.
The sad thing is, many educated women, even those who are financially independent, tolerate abuse, because at the root of it all is a lack of self-esteem and self-worth.
At Naaree.com, one of our primary goals is to provide women with the tools to boost their self-esteem and refuse to settle for anything but the best they deserve, from their husbands, their families, and most importantly, from themselves.
In future workshops, we will focus on this essential area of a woman's growth and development. So do register to receive notifications of our latest activities.
