Wearing shorts or a swimsuit can be a liberating experience for the modern Indian woman… unless of course, she is prone to those dimply creases on her thighs, known as cellulite. Cellulite is perhaps one of the greatest sources of frustration for women around the world.
Even sexy celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Sharon Stone and Beyonce have not managed to escape its clutches. And though there are creams and surgical procedures that promise to remove those pesky dimples, there is still no sure-fire way to remove all of it.
What Is Cellulite?
Cellulite is fat tissues that have bands of connective tissue in them. These tissues are found in certain areas of the body: the thighs, abdominal area and buttocks for the women.
Men have cellulite in the neck and in the abdomen. Often, they are whiter or several shades lighter than their skin tones.
What Causes Cellulite?
When proper circulation occurs, smooth layers ensue; but when fluids in the layers, the stored fats, and chemical toxins do not get flushed out and are trapped within the skin, the tissues harden and thicken, producing bumpy lines in the skin.
Although all people have the same smooth layers of cellulite, its appearance depends on genetics, lifestyle and weight of the individual, all of which are factors in cellulite formation.
There are different types of cellulite deposits. One kind occurs in the muscles of active women such as those who are dancers and runners. These hard or solid cellulite deposits are difficult to remove as they are attached directly to the muscles.
Soft cellulite, on the other hand, is much more visible and may even cause the skin to sag. Though it occurs in large muscle areas, it is easier to remove.
Women are the most common victims of cellulite. The problem can start when they are as young as 14 years old and as they mature, the affected areas become larger.
Women who are on birth control pills and those who have just given birth are also more susceptible. People who have suffered from injuries can also develop cellulite.
Cellulite Treatments: Do They Work?
Cellulite creams available in the market have not proven to be effective in preventing the appearance of cellulite nor can they completely eradicate the tissue deposits.
These creams that contain alpha-hydroxyl acids do not actually remove the cellulite but rather improves the elasticity of the skin, thus making the cellulite less obvious.
Exercise and diet is still, without a doubt, the best way to fight cellulite. Exercise is particularly effective because circulation can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
What Is An Anti-Cellulite Diet?
A detoxifying diet can work well when it comes to reducing cellulite. The diet should include plenty of fruits and vegetables. Whole-grain foods are also recommended. Foods that should be avoided include coffee and soft drinks.
Some say that spicy foods also contribute much to the appearance of cellulite has not been proven yet. Cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol should also be avoided as they create a build-up of toxins in the body.
Although a low-fat diet is not necessary, some experts recommend reducing the consumption of fatty foods as these are harder to digest and to get rid of. Excess fat on the body also enlarges the size of the cellulite deposits.
Water therapy is also effective in helping to reduce the appearance as it washes off toxins in the body as well as removes fats. It also aids in proper digestion and blood circulation.
Myths About Cellulite
There are many misleading “facts” about cellulite that have led women to desperately try to get rid of or avoid getting cellulite. Weeding through the myths and knowing out the facts is an important part of any cellulite reduction program.
1. A myth that seemed almost believable is that soda pop causes cellulite. The theory was that the sodium in soda pop caused fat cells to swell thus producing cellulite. This is not true. Cellulite is fat cells, but they have become deformed and trapped close to the skin in connective tissue.
2. Another myth is that cellulite only happens to those over 40 years old. While cellulite may be more apparent in older people because the skin thins out as we age, it can occur at any age.
3. Many people believe the myth that cellulite can only occur on the thighs and buttocks. While this is the most common area for cellulite to occur, it can also appear on the arm, neck and stomach.
4. Perhaps one of the most common myths is that only overweight people get cellulite. This myth can be devastating to those who are not overweight. Everyone has fat cells, so even skinny people so they too are subject to cellulite.
5. Another myth is that dieting and exercise are sufficient to get rid of cellulite. This is untrue because of the makeup of cellulite. It is unlike other fat that through dieting and exercise can be burned by a person’s metabolism. Cellulite is trapped in the connective tissue and is unaffected by metabolism.
These five myths are most often associated with cellulite. Some of them have even been exploited to sell products that claim to prevent or remove cellulite. Knowing the difference between myth and fact can help you manage your cellulite better.
