What is Kundan made of?
Kundan work is a traditional art of creating Indian gemstone jewellery by setting carefully shaped, uncut diamonds and polished multi-coloured Kundan stones into an exquisitely designed pure gold or faux metal base.
Kundan, meaning highly refined gold, uses a highly refined and pure form of molten gold to create the elaborate Kundan necklaces worn by Indian queens of the past, and the Kundan bridal jewellery that is now part of the bridal wedding trousseau in India.
Bikaneri or Jaipuri jewellery is a variation of Kundan jewellery in which the enamelling with vivid colours and designs is on the reverse, while the Kundan setting is in the front. The thappa and ras rawa traditional settings are also experiencing a revival.
Original Kundan jewellery originated in the Rajasthan Royal court and flourished during the Mughal era. The Rajasthani city of Jaipur is the centre of Kundan art in India.
Today, people even use Kundan for decoration, such as Kundan work in sarees designs, Kundan stones for embroidery, Kundan rangoli designs, Kundan rakhi designs, Kundan thali decorations, and home décor items like Kundan torans.
How is Kundan jewellery made?
The elaborate process of creating Kundan jewellery starts with a skeletal framework called Ghaat into which wax is poured and moulded according to the design in a process called Paadh.
The Kundan stones or uncut gems are fit into the framework during the Khudai process. Enamelling work, called Meenakari, is then done to define the design details.
Gold foils that hold the gems onto the framework are then cold soldered using burnishing techniques during the Pakai process. The final process involves polishing the gemstones using the Chillai process.
What is the difference between Polki and Kundan jewellery?
Original Polki jewellery work uses uncut diamonds, which makes it more expensive as compared to Kundan jewellery. Traditional Polki jewellery is created with unfinished natural diamonds that are polished and chemically treated to look like shiny diamonds.
