An Emcee friend posted a question on our Facebook page, asking where she could find tips to find materials for event Emcee scripts.
What is an MC or Emcee? The master of ceremonies is the host of a ceremony or event where your job is to be an entertaining and humorous speaker.
As a professional master of ceremonies, playing the role of Emcee means keeping your audience engaged and laughing for the duration of the event.
Being a master of ceremony is not easy as you have to constantly assess the energy of the crowd and keep them laughing and happy with funny anecdotes and jokes. It’s a lot like being a comedian, but with an agenda for the event.
Asking how to be a good emcee is not the right question, because it focuses on yourself and will trigger anxiety. Instead ask, “How can I make the event fun for my guests?” That way you’ll be focusing on them and their enjoyment and not on your own insecurities.
Consider it one of your master of ceremonies duties to learn to relax deeply and let your inner comedian loose with this powerful public speaking hypnosis audio.
While there are a lot of very useful coaching materials for speakers online, it takes a little effort to come up with ideas to spice up your Emcee script and be the master entertainer you are.
5 Tips To Spice Up Your Emcee Script
Need ideas for a funny emcee script? Here are 5 tips to find some master of ceremonies humour and be the best master of ceremonies you can be. And be sure to keep a notebook handy when inspiration strikes.
1. Everyday Life
Believe it or not, but daily life is one of the best places to pick up ideas for a speech. The skills you require for this are keen powers of observation and the ability to put a funny or profound spin on events, depending on who your audience is.
Many great comedians and emcees use daily life events with their family and friends and turn it into their funniest material.
Not only can your audience relate to how you went to sleep pissed off at your wife and your Chihuahua did the actual job for you (thanks Jeff Dunham), but the source of your material is all free.
If you’re hired as a wedding emcee, you can actually interview the families of the bride and groom for interesting and hilarious anecdotes to weave into your master of ceremony script.
Making it more personal will also make it more relatable and fun for your audience. Of course, if you plan to make your family the butt of your jokes just make sure you check with them first.
2. Current Events
Reading the newspapers, tabloids or watching television can give you some great ideas for scripts because there’s never a dearth of things you can make fun of.
Comedians like Jay Leno and John Oliver use current events as fodder for an entire section on their show. And throwing in a snippet of news with a funny spin helps keep your emcee script fresh and newsy.
3. YouTube And Comedy Videos
YouTube is a source of great entertainment, amusement and fun for millions of people. You can use it to check out the trending videos and see what people are watching.
You can also watch videos of emcees and comedians in action online, such as how to emcee an event and funny master of ceremonies introductions.
Or you can just browse through the vast variety of video content and find amazing ideas to help you connect with your audience.
One of my favourite sites for comedic humour is DryBarComedy. You can download their app and watch the standup comedy whether you need new jokes or just want a middle-of-the-day pick-me-up.
4. Funny Quote Sites
The internet is a vast and rich source of websites offering quotes, jokes, memes and all sorts of materials for free.
Just type “funny quotes” or “funny jokes” into Google and you’ll get a wealth of information in for all occasions and audiences.
Here are some of our favourite sources for funnies you can use in your master of ceremony script.
- Reader’s Digest
Remember those unsolicited email forwards that your friends keep spamming you with?
Some of them are funny and some are just plain irritating, but all of them are a good way to keep your finger on the pulse of what people are thinking about.
The next time you get a funny email or forwarded message from your friends, don’t delete it.
Copy and paste the funny part into a document on your desktop and use that as a swipe file the next time you need ideas for your emcee script.
I hope these master of ceremony tips have boosted your confidence in your ability to be a funny master of ceremonies and keep your audience in splits from start to finish.
